It is drizzling without break and we went around leh in scooty for few hour ride and it was manageable with rain coats and wind cheater jackets. Please pack light weight Good rain coats as i saw dozens of bikers in full gear returning from pangong to leh. Most of the locals are roaming on roads with simple overcoat and cap but no idea whether heavy rains may block road to nubra or pangong in coming days.

It's not like government gets paid crores to ignore the pollution caused by industries, power plants and others. It's not likely this increases the chances of a 5yo getting lung cancer and all the money that his family has saved working over decades will be used for treatment and the kid still won't survive.

I have a question for extended ncr as well as test of India residents. 


Do compare the outdoor aqi numbers you see online (weather apps, maps etc) for your area this year with last year,  and tell me if for the same number of the pollution is much much worse. 


Last week my area was showing outdoors aqi in 300s, and my air purifiers were struggling to keep pm2.5 below 100 indoors.  Last year when pm2.5 outdoors was over 450,  the same devices easily maintained it below 50 - often below 30.


Do you notice similar issues?

Sure but some places are much more prone that others. I'm in Michigan right now and yesterday it was 80 which is super rare especially since it is almost November. I think the midwest will become a LOT more popular in the next few decades since the weather in the winter will be a lot more mild.

I heard that places that have experienced major natural disasters (think California - fire areas) are actually safer places to live than places that haven’t yet experienced something catastrophic (think Asheville). I read an article that said the places that have experienced disaster are more prepared for it to happen again, vs the places that don’t anticipate devastation. Interesting food for thought. I’m in Austin where it’s been years since our last regional catastrophic flooding / fires, so I worry we aren’t as prepared as we could be (especially all the newcomers who may think those kinds of events don’t happen here.)

Haven't experienced any weather in MA in my lifetime that I would consider even in the same category as what Florida sees multiple times annually. The worst storms we've had have been the remnants of whatever has hit the gulf states days earlier, or blizzards that honestly were some of my coziest memories. And the weather has only gotten more mild over these past years.

However, there are places that are prone to disaster and definitely should.be taken into consideration.

500 year event is not the same as repeated threats. Using this example to tell people they should consider ALL places because of a anamoly in another is strange.

As someone who lived in DC the week an earthquake damaged our house and a subsequent hurricane caused our house to flood, I get your point. However, you can't say that risks of earthquakes and extreme weather are uniformly distributed through the US and the rest of the world.

I think Midwest will be “safe” spot states like Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, so on…. I wanna say Iowa too just they are just too dependent on corn and all the fertilizers that they’ve used but Iowa is also home to MASSIVE amount of underground water reservoir also checkout upstate NY!

Last year during hurricane season a weakening hurricane Hillary passed right over my house ... in Central Nevada. 300 miles from the coast and a mile above sea level. it did much damage to roads around here. Ive been here 15 years and that was a first for me.

So many posts of people denying reality and posting that they believe they won't face a potential catastrophe at some time in their life because they live in X, Y, Z place are once against proving me right.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt and the less prepared you are because your mindset is "It will never happen here" the more likely you are of having serious issues during an emergency because you were unprepared.

I grew up in laguna Niguel/dana point CA, never experienced any natural disasters in the past 30 yrs. Never had fires, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, snow etc in the areas. The most moderate climate I’ve ever experienced and I’ve lived and traveled all over. Maybe laguna beach or Alison viejo with the fires but not LN.

Sure. But isn’t there a large mountain range just outside Valencia? If it’s an arid climate that doesn’t get much rainfall that means they are susceptible to rain events bc the environs aren’t built to absorb such rainfall. 

Don’t disagree with your argument. But I think your example is bad. 

I’m in the Midwest and we’ll get droughts or extreme rain/snow. But we’ll never have a flooding event like Valencia. We need to upgrade pumping in the below ground freeway but the Great Lakes won’t overflow their banks in any way to cause flooding. It’ll get hot but never Texas heatwave hot.

DC is fairly safe from most natural disasters IMHO.  We have the mountains in the West and North Carolina's extension into the Atlantic to protect us from wind-borne events, we're not on the water and fairly high up considering most folks think DC either on the water, or built on swamplands (that's less than 2% of the city - and those are the tourist areas.  

Most of the buildings are brick/stone/stick so it would have to be pretty significant wind event to topple buildings.  Realistic possibilities are earthquakes - which aren't common here - but heat and snow pose the greatest challenge I would think.  

So we're not immune, but I think DC is not nearly at risk as some other cities like all the FL coastal cities, NOLA, NYC, etc...

Events like tornadoes, hail storms, etc., tend to be pinpoint events.  They can be violent, but they impact small areas.  Things like earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods can impact large areas indiscriminately. 

As a general matter, humans know where earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods have historically occurred and therefore are likely to occur in the future.  And yet humans build cities in those places.

Changing weather patterns have brought flooding to areas that have not previously seen flooding, like way up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, or Valencia Spain.  That is troubling.

I don't know about Spain but unfortunately in AZ deaths from flooding aren't uncommon. The ground is too hard to absorb water so when it does rain here we get what's called flash flooding where it floods extremely quickly and people and cars can get washed away.

Some places take a lot less preparation or it's actually already as good as it will get. I've lived most of my life close to the Mississippi.
I face increased river flooding. That's a slow moving disaster that has already been mostly accounted for. There will likely be more tornadoes, but that's always been a risk that most people are prepared for.

Some places are safer than others tho. Near Philly a few years ago we got hit with an F3 tornado, and hurricane sandy back in like 2012

No place is 100% safe but you can identify places with lower risk based on the frequency of extreme weather as well as their preparedness.

For example, Arizona also gets flash floods occasionally, but they have much more modern flood control systems so they rarely see deaths or major destruction from them. They get extreme heat every summer, but they have modern AC so same thing there (compared to say France where hundreds die every time there's a heat wave)

In the US there is a thing called hazard mitigation planning which occurs in most counties throughout the country and occurs in every state throughout the country. Major cities also do it. This is the process of identifying the hazards that threaten the communities of their jurisdictions and implementing mitigation measures to increase resistance to hazards and ultimately reduce their impact on the community. States are required to do this in order to be eligible for certain disaster grants/funding from FEMA once a hazard becomes a disaster. Hazards are things that are addressed year round.

You should be aware of them. And it should be a factor in your decision making, but it should not be the main factor.

Highly localized extreme rain events can happen just about anywhere and so can drought. However, you'll always be better off in some places than others. Personally I'm sticking with New Jersey. I don't expect too much. If the world ended today I would adjust.

I live in Spokane, where the main threat is wildfires.

It's truly about picking which natural disaster you'd be willing to face. For me, I chose to deal with wildfires since we have a bit of control over them. We can prevent some wildfires by controlled burning practices, and we can obviously put them out. Not trying to downplay the dangers, though.

You can't control a hurricane. You can't control a tornado. You are at the mercy of a flash flood. You can't cool yourself off in a wet bulb.

I'd take occasional smoke and wildfire threats over any of that.

I mean this isn't particularly useful. Probabilities are how we make decisions. Just because something could happen anywhere doesn't mean the probabilities are the same of it happening. Between historical experience and projections we can get a decent idea of places more prone to serious weather events. Whether that's a driver for your move or not though is up to each individual.

When I was a kid, I lived near a creek that once swelled so much it came within about an inch of the ground floor of our house. My parents were in a panic, and had us all moving everything upstairs. Not too scary, but definitely not fun.

After the water receded, there was a bunch of horribly smelly muck and dead fish in the yard, which my dog promptly used to become the smelliest animal on earth.

I was in first grade when this happened and remembered hearing about it on the news and following the storm with my teacher in class. I was much too young to really grasp the gravity of what happened in New Orleans and it really wasn’t until my adult life that I really comprehended the sheer devastation.

I know a girl whose mom is from NOLA and refuses to go back because of how scarred she is from the memory of it. “Just total societal collapse” she calls it. She recalls Katrina the way a lot of old veterans recall war. 

Helene wrecked my city last year. Just going a few weeks without power was enough to throw our lives for a spin. It really gave me a lot of perspective on the horror of Katrina. As debilitating as the aftermath of Helene was, it was only a fraction (specifically in my city) of what Katrina left in her wake.

I’m glad that Katrina weakened somewhat before landfall, but it was still the storm of a generation. I hope if we ever face a storm like that again that the nation does better in response.

A lot of lives were destroyed 20 years ago. The people of Louisiana, those who came to their aid. I have friends and loved ones who lived there and who went to help as part of the military. They all are still traumatized. They go on, but it was a fucking lot and way more than any documentary can tell.

It was devastating and I know many who have a lot of trauma they haven’t been able to unpack because of this storm. When I say life long trauma, I’m not being hyperbolic.

I feel some kind of way seeing these posts, we need to remember and not to forget and repeat the failures that happened, but it’s also a sensitive thing for so many still.

I went down to NO in July ‘06 for humanitarian work with a church I went to. I don’t say mission trip because we weren’t preaching, and we did work that most churches wouldn’t touch. Like gutting houses, for example. I’ll always be proud of what our little group accomplished. I’ll never forget seeing the abandoned 6 flags as you cross the bridge entering the city. The silence that befell the van was unique. Helene changed our entire region last year, but seeing where we are now compared to where NO was at this point makes me realize how insanely powerful and destructive Katrina was.
